Life in the UK Test

Although the material available here is sufficient to pass your exam ,we advise you to read the official text book Life in the UK: A Journey to Citizenship published by the Home Office.

About the Life in the UK test?

Who should take this test?

If you are applying for naturalisation as a British citizen or for indefinite leave to remain(ILR), you will need to show that you know about life in the UK.You can do this in two ways:

1. By taking the Life in the UK Test ,if your level of English is ESOL Entry 3 or above

2. By taking combined English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and citizenship classes,if your level of English is lower than ESOL Entry 3. Most local further education or community colleges run these courses

Should every one sit this test?

No.There are exemptions to this requirement

1.If the applicant is less than 18 years old or above 65 years old or

2.If he/she suffer from severe medical conditions that make them difficult to sit the exam.

What are ESOL and citizenship classes?

ESOL and citizenship classes help you to improve your English and learn more about life in the UK. You can take these classes at your local further education or community college. To find out more about ESOL and citizenship classes, contact your local college, or call the Life in the UK Test Helpline on 0800 0154245.

Where can I take the test?

There are more than 90 test centres around the country where you can take your test in a welcoming and friendly environment. Most of them are also learning centres where you can brush up on your language or computer skills. Find out your nearest test centre

How do I book a test?

Contact a test centre during opening hours by telephone or in person. The test centre will offer you a place in one of their test sessions within 1 to 4 weeks of your request. There is a minimum waiting period of 7 days between making your booking and being able to take the test. The test is computer-based and is a series of 24 questions.In order to pass the test you have answer at least 18 questions correctly.All the questions are based on 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship', the official publication.

How do I prepare for my test?

You should study chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the 'Life in the United Kingdom' handbook(second) edition very carefully. If you intend to sit before September 2007 you can choose the old version of the test and have to study only chapters 2,3,and 4.

How long does the test last?

You will have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions. This gives you plenty of time to choose your answers and check them again before the end. You do not need to rush to finish the test quickly; remember to use all of the time that you are given. If you have certain medical conditions, you may be allowed more time. You must tell the test centre of any medical conditions when you book your test.
